About GYKD

What is GYKD about?
GYKD is about the motorcycling community in South Africa. It is a place to get advice and soak up others experience as well as chatting about motorcycles in general. We aim to be a one stop place were one can get all the information they need on matters concerning motorcycling. The site tries to encourage members to post regular reviews on bikes and other related products. We aim to provide the user with an informal place were one can get in touch with other people selling or buying a particular motorcycle. Most importantly the site aims to provide a a place to make new friends and enjoy a common interest!

The site being launched in March 2004 is relatively new on the block but between then and time of writting has attracted around 100 users who have posted in the region of 4000 posts.
How was the site created?
It uses a combination of xhtml (the replacement for html), CSS (used to seperate content from layout and provide a suitable tool to create layout) and most importantly PHP (used in conjuction with mySQL to provide the user with the ability to influence the data on the site). The site has been created such that it is complient with the latest W3 regulations to ensure that it will run with the largest variety of devices. Although CSS and xhtml are still in the infancies it seems worthwhile to make the jump at this early stage.

Interesting site on CSS: CSS Zen Garden!

Valid XHTML 1.0!Valid CSS!
Who was the site started by?
The site was written from scratch by Jeffrey Davies. Currently studying computer science at the University of Cape Town and a motorcycle enthuasiast!

Other stuff
Although GYKD was written to run on any browser and device certain browsers (namely Internet Explorer) failed to adompt many of the CSS standards. As a result using IE may mean that your viewing experience is limited in many senses. At this point I would like to recommend Mozilla Firefox as a decent (free) browser. It is as good as IE and offers a number of features that IE does not. Not to mention that this site will run as intended if you use it over IE.
