Sponge Bob
Performance is adequate to say the least in standard trim, but with a bit of work (not too extensive) it can become a fairly quick machine. Pop a decent aftermarket exhaust on, deristrict it and maybe a few moderate mods to the carbs (do NOT install the VFR carbs - no real marked improvement) and you are more than capable of exceeding the 220 mark!
It's looks are unmatched in this class which few people would dispute. Based on that classic the RC45 little can be found wanting on the beautiful, sculpted lines of this baby!
As for the handling it is easy to throw around without having to be too concerned about losing it and has been known to make a few of the larger capacity bikes out there a little green with envy through a mountain pass and on a tight and twisty track due to it's short wheelbase and reasonably well set up suspension.
The value of the bike can be debated. Due to them becoming increasingly rare the prices are rapidly getting out of control considering the age of the bike and in most cases it is hard to justify spending more than R 30 000 on a 400 when you can get a reasonable 600 in the same price range. If you are an enthusiast like me, who needs justification!!
Reliabilty is well up there. That V4 motor is nothing short of indestructable. Though the rec/reg (if still standard) can cause problems. If replaced with a decent aftermarket part, those worries should disapate quite rapidly. The main concern is availability of parts and this could be a cause for concern when buying one.
Grin factor, well all one has to do is take it for a blast around a track or through some tight twisties and it'll be stretching from ear to ear.
Overall it is a decent package for looks, releiabilty and performance. All in all a very well designed bike worthy of all the praise heaped on it when first launched. My only gripe is .......why the hell did they stop producing them?????
